Décor tips for hospitality

Merino Laminates, November 5, 2024 Updated On : April 29, 2025

As we travel on work or leisure, one of the most important things that we look at, is the place we choose to stay at. Depending on varied factors like the nature of the trip, ease of accessibility to tourist spots or the workplace, budget etc., we choose a hotel or a resort to have a relaxed and a safe experience. Thus, the design of these spaces must be strategically conceptualised in order to offer the guests a comfortable and safe stay while offering the services and experience promised by the brand. The design of such spaces is not merely spatial planning, but it should be a reflection of the branding, ethos and ideologies of the business. Be it a budget or a luxury resort- it should deliver a memorable experience to the guests which would prompt them to come back again and again while also recommending the property to their friends and family. Here are some decor tips that you should bear in mind to create an elegant and functional space in the hospitality sector:

1. Create the best first impression!

The design of the hotel or resort should be such that it impresses the visitor as soon as they enter. As the guests walk in, they must feel welcomed by the decor of the reception and waiting area. The reception should be grand, welcoming, decluttered and it should depict the theme that is envisioned for the properties. There should be ample, comfortable seating for the guests to wait or lounge at. It is also important for this space to be well-lit and it should be free of any bad odours and ideally have a subtle fragrance that would instantly make the visitors feel at ease. Fresh cut flowers, artwork, elegant sculptures, landscaped indoor or outdoor spaces make the experience more welcoming for the users.

2. User friendly navigation

The layout of the common area which may comprise of the reception, restaurant, pool, bar, lift lobby etc should be easy to navigate while ensuring that intruders cannot enter without passing through the reception. A confusing layout or lack of proper planning can make the experience unpleasant for the guests as they may not be able to find the amenities easily on their own. A chaotic layout also gives leeway for uninvited guests and non-residents of the hotel to easily enter the rooms or the exclusive amenities for the occupants.

3. The design of the rooms

The rooms are the most crucial part of the design when it comes to hotels or resorts and the design of the same can determine the credibility of the business or the brand. The layout of the room should be clutter free and there should be ample lighting- comprising of task and ambient lighting to ensure a comfortable stay to the users. The kind of furniture used and the quality of the same must be prioritised so as to offer a relaxed experience to the occupants of the room. The decor should align with the theme of the entire property and it should be well ventilated to avoid making the space look dull and to avoid unpleasant odours, dampness etc. There should be enough space in the room to walk around easily and there should be enough storage for the guests to store their luggage during their stay.

4. Bathrooms design

The bathroom design is another critical aspect that must be addressed. It should be spacious enough with good quality sanitary fittings and it should be geared with all the essentials as per the scale of operations of the property. Be it a high-end hotel offering bath-tubs or a mid-range one offering a standard private bathroom- a pleasant and efficient design is of paramount importance. There should be no stagnation of water and the layout should segregate the wet and dry areas clearly to offer a pleasant experience to the users. It should be well-ventilated and well lit, with tiling and finishes that make the space look clean and user-friendly. Avoid the usage of tiles with too many colours or designs and sanitary fittings in darker colours as both these can make the space look small and cluttered.

5. The theme!

Lastly and most importantly, it is important to have a theme that runs through the hotel or the resort. You could go for a minimalistic theme for a business hotel or a nature inspired theme for a resort- having a clear vision about the ambiance you wish to create has a great impact on your design. The material used should help elevate the look of the space and the same can be achieved by the careful layering of colours, patterns and textures. You can pick from over 500 options from Merino Laminates to create interesting wall claddings, panels and even furniture as laminates are cost effective, sturdy and easy to clean and replace as compared to painted walls, wallpapers etc.

From super-glossy, mirror-like laminates that are perfect to create a sleek and modern look to laminates with traditional Indian motifs, there are varied options that you can choose from, to create a great impression on the users.

We hope that these tips help you create a great design that will help your client build a niche for themselves while offering the guests a memorable experience. A well designed hotel is not just a winner for the business owner but a winner for  the end user as well.
